Rates are falling; counts keep rising, because the population is growing and aging. Demand for treatment chairs goes up, not down.
And in Ontario
Cancer is the province's leading cause of death. In 2018, the most recent complete year reported by Ontario Health, cancer caused 27.7% of all deaths in Ontario, and 29,712 people died of it: almost as many as the next three leading causes combined.
Cancer is not a rare-service problem to be centralized. It is the most common serious illness our region will face, and it is treated over weeks and months, not in a single visit.
The Huntsville clinic is not a quiet corner of the hospital
MAHC's own 2024–25 activity report. Chemotherapy and infusion visits outnumber births by more than eighteen to one, and sit in the same range as dialysis, another service patients cannot travel far for.

The drive, and the highway
Huntsville to Bracebridge is roughly 30 minutes in good conditions, 60 minutes added to a round trip, before winter, before construction, before a closure. For patients coming from Burk's Falls, Sundridge, Kearney, Magnetawan or South River, that is on top of a drive they already make.

HIGHWAY 11 CLOSURES
No agency publishes an average number of annual closures for the Huntsville–Bracebridge segment specifically. What is on the record is that closures of this corridor are routine in winter, and that there is no practical alternate route:
Jan 20, 2026: both directions closed, Bracebridge to Gravenhurst, multiple collisions in poor visibility.
Jan 23, 2026: a 20-to-30 vehicle pile-up closed Highway 11 for most of a working day.
Feb 22: a fatal collision south of Madill Church Road closed the southbound lanes for about 3.5 hours.
